Sea Pods

There’s a quiet crisis unfolding beneath the waves along the Sussex coast.

Where dense kelp forests once swayed and marine life thrived, large areas of seabed have fallen silent. Decades of change, from fishing and dredging to storms and shifting climates, have transformed a once-rich ecosystem into something fragile, and in places, almost barren.

But just off the coast, something remarkable has begun…

Born from a lifetime spent on and under these waters, Sussex Sea Pods is a pioneering restoration project led by commercial diver Alan Minter. Inspired by nature and shaped by experience, these purpose-built reef structures are designed to bring life back to the seabed: Creating shelter, encouraging biodiversity, and helping marine ecosystems recover.

The first prototype, affectionately named The Minter Hotel, was placed on the seabed as a test.

Within days, it was alive.

Now, the mission is clear: scale this solution, restore our coastal waters, and build something that will last for generations.

What is a Sea Pod?

A Sussex Sea Pod is a purpose-designed artificial reef structure, carefully shaped to mimic natural forms found in the marine environment.

Built to sit securely on the local seabed, each pod creates shelter, surface area, and protection - the essential ingredients for marine life to return and thrive.

Think of it as a foundation stone for rebuilding an ecosystem.

About Alan Minter

Alan Minter has spent over 40 years working in and around the waters of the Sussex coast, witnessing first-hand the dramatic changes to the seabed.

Born in 1958 on the Lancing–Shoreham border, he grew up by the sea: Fishing from a young age and owning his own boat by sixteen. With family roots in Shoreham docks, the marine environment has always been central to his life.

Since starting his diving career in 1979, Alan has worked extensively on the seabed. Over time, he has seen once dense kelp forests give way to increasingly barren ground.

What used to be waist-deep in kelp has, over time, become almost barren.

The Beginning of Sussex Sea Pods

Determined to make a difference, Al began developing reef structures to restore lost habitat in one of the last areas where marine life remained.

After years of planning and a lengthy licensing process, the first prototype - inspired by natural limpet forms - was deployed.

The impact was immediate.

Marine life returned within days, confirming the potential of a simple but powerful idea.

Refined and improved, the design became the Sussex Sea Pod, a practical, scalable solution built from decades of real-world experience.
